The Barr Foundation is committed to helping Boston and Massachusetts meet or exceed their 2020 and 2050 targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and become national models for reducing GHG emissions. The Barr Foundation has supported the development and growth of the Challenge for Sustainability.

In July 2014, the City of Boston and A Better City established a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the roles and responsibilities for the City and ABC relating to the implementation and support of commercial real estate, energy, conservation and greenhouse gas reduction programs. The MOU establishes a framework for further collaboration to support the sustainability and economic competitiveness of the city.
